Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 6-12 November 2009. Disney's new, Jim Carrey, animated A Christmas Carol topped the charts, scaring up $40.1 million in its first week in the theatres. The Men Who Stare at Goats opened at #3 (behind the second week of Michael Jackson's This Is It). Goats dragged in $17.2 million. The Fourth Kind was the third new film at the top of the charts, opening at #4 and grabbing $15.8 million. Paranormal Activity was pushed from #2 to #5, taking in $10.8 million, for a seven-week total box office take of $99.6 million. Another new film, The Box (based on Richard Matheson's "Button, Button") opened at #6, earning $10.0 million. Where the Wild Things Are was down from #5 to #9, taking in $6.0 million, for a four-week total of $71.0 million. Astro Boy slipped from #7 to #10, grossing $3.8 million, for a three week total of $16.3 million.
Saw VI fell from #6 to #12, bringing in $2.8 million, for a three-week total of $27.0 million The Stepfather fell from #8 to #14, scaring up $2.4 million, for a four-week total of $28.0 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs slipped from #11 to #15, grabbing $2.0 million, for an eight-week total of $121.7 million. Zombieland slipped from #12 to #16, taking in $1.9 million, for a six-week total of $74.1 million. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant fell from #10 to #17, grossing $1.6 million, for a three-week total of $13.4 million.
Halloween II (which last week popped back into the top 25 after five weeks below the level) this week again fell out of the top 25; it's been in the theatres for 11 weeks. Surrogates, last week's #21, fell out of the top 25 in its seventh week in release. And the Toy Story / Toy Story 2 re-release closed after five weeks (last week, it was #22) and a little less than $31 million.
