Ellen Kaye-Cheveldayoff Names Baen Books' Vampire Anthology

By Ian Randal Strock

Baen Books has announced the winner of their "Name That Vampire Anthology" contest (which we first announced in this article in July), or, as Baen's Laura Haywood-Cory says, "Baen stakes out new territory in bloody awful punnery." The contest sought a title for the third in editor Esther Friesner's series of humorous suburban dark fantasy anthologies (following Witch Way to the Mall and Strip Mauled).

The Grand Prize Winner, chosen by Publisher Toni Weisskopf, is Fangs for the Mammaries, submitted by Ellen Kaye-Cheveldayoff. Weisskopf says, "Several people sent in 'Fangs for the Memories', but only Ellen went that extra distance into the territory of the truly vile double pun. I can't wait to see what cover artist Clyde Caldwell will do with the material."

Editorial Assistant Haywood-Cory says, "In addition to the literary immortality of seeing the chosen title in print and her concept illustrated, the winner will be prominently blamed, we mean thanked, in the introduction, receive ten free copies of the book, and a check for one hundred dollars."

Honorable mentions, which garner their authors free copies of the book (due to be released in October 2010), include:

Mall Bats, because it continues the mall-in-the-title theme of the previous two books. Submitted by Dan Hoyt, C. Daetwyler, Mike Boos, Geoffrey Kidd, Gordon Parks, April Follies, Don Greenstein, and Deborah Lambert.

Mall Bites, submitted by Brian Peterson.

Blood, Bath & Beyond, submitted by Karen Bovenmyer, and David White.

Desperate House-Vamps, submitted by Katharina Schuschke, and Michael Ellis.

Vlad Men, submitted by Jessica Melusine.

Coffins & Cul-de-Sacs, submitted by Greg McElhatton.

Little Boxes on the Hillside, submitted by Carlton McKenney.

Baen Books extends congratulations to the winner and honorable mentions, and thanks to everyone who participated in the contest. They hope it was as fun for you to participate as it was for them to read all of the entries.
