Strange Horizons fund-raising drive update, and submission problems

By Ian Randal Strock

We have follow-up information on last week's article about on-line 'zine Strange Horizons' fund-raising drive (SH is "a weekly web-based magazine of and about speculative fiction"). Their goal was to raise $7,000 during the month of August, to fund a year's worth of content and publication. At the time of the article, they had only brought in about $1,500. Now, thanks to the publicity generated by John Scalzi's matching donation (he matched $500 of donations received one day last week) and the concomitant publicity that announcement brought, Strange Horizons has received more than $13,000 in donations, and looks to be funded for the next year or more.

Also, a market report from Senior Fiction Editor Jed Hartman: They've been having a lot of trouble with Gmail addresses. Specifically, they know that many, if not most, of their e-mails to gmail accounts are not arriving, or are being spam-foldered. If you've submitted and not had a response, first check your spam folder. If there's nothing there, Hartman recommends a query, preferably from a non-gmail address. "And if you're about to submit to us, consider using a non-Gmail email address if possible."

Since our last article, Strange Horizons published:
"Origin" by Ari Goelman (fiction)
"Minstrel's Last Song" by Robert Borski (poetry)
more of their thrice-weekly reviews
