The Writers of the Future ongoing writing contest has added a new judge: Mike Resnick.
Authors Services, the company that administers the contest, said that Resnick responded to their request by saying "I really will love doing this. I am a firm believer in paying forward. Count me in." Talking about the contest's history, he said "Over the years it has become and remains the leading venue for the recognition of talented new writers. It has had competition from time to time, which is always healthy and beneficial, but Writers of the Future alone endures, which bespeaks its value to the field." Resnick is the author of more than 200 novels (many of them under pseudonyms), and the winner of five Hugo Awards.
The quarterly contest series was established in 1983, for new authors, offering cash prizes of up to $5,000. Resnick joins a team of 16 judges, which includes: Kevin J. Anderson, Doug Beason, Gregory Benford, Orson Scott Card, Brian Herbert, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Yoji Kondo (aka Eric Kotani), Anne McCaffrey, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Frederik Pohl, Tim Powers, Robert J. Sawyer, Robert Silverberg, K.D. Wentworth, and Dave Wolverton. Hoffman, Wentworth, and Wolvertson were contest winners before becoming judges.
