Emperor Norton Awards winners

By Ian Randal Strock

The winners of this year's Emperor Norton Awards, which we made mention of in this article, were announced on Sunday at Borderlands Books, during Tachyon Publications' fourteenth anniversary celebrations.

This year's winners are:
Doug Dorst for Alive in Necropolis (published by Riverhead Books)
Charlie Jane Anders for Writers with Drinks and io9.com

Tachyon's publisher Jacob Weisman explains the awards: "The Emperor Norton Award is a Bay Area centric award, co-sponsored by Borderlands Books and Tachyon Publications.

"Two awards are given each year for 'extraordinary invention and creativity unhindered by the constraints of paltry reason.' One award is given for a work of literature and another is given for Bay Area service. The judges are Alan Beatts (proprietor of Borderlands Books), Richard A. Lupoff (esteemed author), and myself.

"The award is named after and commemorates the memory of Joshua Norton I, Emperor of the United States of America and Protector of Mexico, and one of the most beloved residents of San Francisco. More about his life can be found in this Wikipedia entry."

Previous winners of the awards include: Kage Baker and Ron Turner (2003), Mark Budz and Frank M. Robinson (2004), Jack Vance and Grania Davis (2005), Tim Pratt and The Other Change of Hobbit (2006), Nancy Farmer and Ray Nelson (2007), and Cory Doctorow and Jack Rems (2008).
