Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 27 March-2 April 2009. Yet again, a new opener took the top spot. This week, it was Monsters vs. Aliens on top, bringing in $72.2 million in its first week in release. New opener The Haunting in Connecticut ranked second, grossing $27.7 million. They pushed last week's #1, Knowing, down to #3, but it still brought in $18.6 million, for a two-week total of $50.1 million. Last week's #1-#4 held their relative ranks, as Race to Witch Mountain , was pushed down from #4 to #6, taking in another $7.4 million, for a three-week total of $55.0 million. Another new film, 12 Rounds slipped into the #7 spot, pushing Watchmen down from #5 to #8. This week, the graphic novel turned film earned $3.7 million, for a four-week total of $104.3 million. The Last House on the Left was down from #6 to #9, grossing $3.6 million, for a three-week total of $29.4 million.
Coraline was among the bigger drops at the top. This week, the spookily animated girl dropped from #10 to #17, bringing in $450 thousand, for an eight-week total of $74.1 million. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button returned to the top 25 this week, clocking in at #23, and earning another $300 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $127.1 million. It fell out of the top 25 two weeks ago.
Push (last week's #23) fell out of the top 25 in its eighth week in release, as did The Uninvited, last week's #25, which has been in the theatres for nine weeks.
