By Ian Randal Strock

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 16-22 January 2009. New release My Bloody Valentine 3-D opened in the #3 spot (behind opening comedy Paul Blart Mall Cop and drama Gran Torino, which has been out for six weeks). Valentine grossed $27.7 million. The Unborn, which we somehow missed last week when it opened at #3, this week dropped to #8, taking in $11.6 million, for a two-week total of $34.9 million.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button fell from #5 to #11 this week, grossing $8.0 million, for a four-week total of $105.0 million. Bedtime Stories also fell, from #6 to #12, taking in $6.7 million, for a four-week total of $105.6 million. Twilight was down from #12 to #18, earning $2.6 million, for a nine-week total of $185.0 million. The Tale of Despereaux dropped from #14 to #23, grossing $1.2 million, for a five-week total of $49.3 million.

The Day the Earth Stood Still dropped from #17 out of the top 25 in its sixth week in release. Bolt dropped out of the top 25 from #19 in its ninth week. And The Spirit, which was last week's #23, also fell out of the top, after a scant four weeks in release.
