Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week of October

By Ian Randal Strock

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 17-23 October 2008. Quarantine dropped from its #2 opening to #7 (behind three new releases), grossing $7.8 million for a two-week total of $26.2 million. It's still the only sf/f/h film in the top ten.

The Dark Knight was down from #19 to #20, taking in $600 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $527.5 million. WALL-E returned to the top 25, appearing at #23, with a box office take of $425 thousand, for a seventeen-week total of $222.2 million (it fell out of the top 25 two weeks ago). Journey to the Center of the Earth, too, returned to the top 25, appeaing at #24 (it, too, fell off the charts two weeks ago), grossing $325 thousand, for a fifteen week total of $100.9 million. Igor dropped from #18 to #25, bringing in $300 thousand, for a five-week total of $18.6 million.

Ghost Town, which was at #24 last week, dropped out of the top 25 in this, its fifth week in release. Blindness, which last week was #20, appears to have closed after a scant two weeks open in US theatres (it took in less than $2.9 million in its first week, and only $750 thousand in its second).
