Top Box Office Grossers: First Week of September

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 29 August-4 September 2008. Last week's #1, Tropic Thunder, held onto the top spot for a third week. New release, the genre film Babylon A.D., opened at #2, grossing nearly $13.2 million. The Dark Knight had a resurgence, climbing from #4 last week to #3, taking in another $12.8 million for a seven-week total of $506.5 million (becoming only the second film to gross more than half a billion dollars in domestic box office, see this article). Death Race dropped from #3 to #6, grossing $9.3 million for a two-week total of $26.2 million. Star Wars: The Clone Wars dropped from #6 to #10, bringing in $4.2 million, for a three-week total of $31.1 million.

Mirrors was down from #8 to #12, taking in $3.9 million, for a three-week total of $25.9 million. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor dropped from #9 to #13, bringing in $3.9 million, for a five-week total of $99.1 million. Journey to the Center of the Earth slipped from #15 to #16, grossing $2.7 million for an eight-week total of $95.5 million. Fly Me to the Moon was down from #16 to #18, taking in just under $2.3 million, for a three-week total of $7.0 million. WALL-E fell from #17 to #21, bringing in $1.8 million for a ten-week total of $218.6 million. Kung Fu Panda was back down this week, from #21 down to #24, just under $900 thousand, for a thirteen-week total of $213.8 million.

Hancock and Space Chimps both fell out of the top 25. The drunk superhero dropped from last week's #22 off the list in its ninth week in release. The monkeys took the plunge from last week's #25 after only seven weeks in the theatres.
