Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 25-31 July 2008. The Dark Knight retained the #1 spot (and, we hear, edged out The Mummy in the latter's opening weekend, see below), taking in more than $104 million in its second week in release, for a cumulative box office take of nearly $342.7 million. Journey to the Center of the Earth maintained the #4 position, even with Step Brothers opening in the #2 spot. Journey grossed $14 million for a three-week total of $64.8 million. New release The X-Files: I Want to Believe opened in the #5 spot, taking in $12.9 million. Hancock fell from #3 to #6, grossing nearly $11.6 million for a four-week total of $209.7 million. WALL-E was down from #5 to #7, bringing in $9.5 million for a five-week total of $198.4 million. Hellboy II: The Golden Army dropped from #6 to #8, earning $7.1 million, for a three-week total of $68.1 million. Space Chimps fell from #7 to #9, grossing $6.8 million, for a two-week total of $18.4 million. Wanted fell from #8 to #10, taking in $3.8 million for a five-week total of $129.7 million.
Get Smart was down from #9 to #11, taking in $3.3 million for a six-week total of $125.2 million. Kung Fu Panda fell from #10 to #12, bringing in $1.6 million for an eight-week total of $209.6 million. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull held steady at #13, grossing another $800 thousand for a ten-week total of $313.9 million. The Incredible Hulk also held on to the #15 spot, taking in more than $600 thousand for a seven-week total of $132.7 million. Meet Dave opened poorly and continued down, this week from #11 to #17, grossing just over $500 thousand for a three-week total of $11 million. Iron Man fell from #16 to #19, taking in $450 thousand for a thirteen-week total of $315.1 million. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian moved up this week, from #24 to #22, bringing in another $350 thousand for an eleven-week total of $140.1 million. The Happening was down from #23 to #25, grossing $200 thousand for a seven-week total of $64 million.
The Dark Knight appears to have taken in an estimated $43.8 million this weekend, compared to new contender The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which just missed with $42.5 million.
