Boom! Studios and Disney Publishing team up to bring Pixar films to comic books

By Ian Randal Strock

Boom! Studios and Disney Publishing Worldwide have announced a partnership whereby Boom! will publish new stories based on Pixar films as comic books. Early plans call for books featuring the Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and WALL-E franchises, as well as The Incredibles, which Boom! Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid will be writing (cover art by Darwyn Cooke). "Today, American comic books are aimed primarily at an older readership. Comics produced for an upcoming generation of readers are scarcec, and Boom! aims to do something about that," said Waid. "There will be comics for kids again."

To kick off the new line, Boom! has a special preview book featuring sneak previews of the planned line with commentary by Waid. This preview "will give comic fans and interested parents a look at the quality comics Boom! will be producing for a younger audience by the end of the year. They also expect to have lines based on Cars and Monsters Inc.. The preview book will be available at Boom!'s San Diego Comic-Con booth this weekend.

"It's nothing short of an honor to work with Disney Publishing Worldwide and Pixar for this project," said Boom! co-founder Ross Richie. "We found kindred spirits in the creative counterparts we have at both companies, and have just really had a fantastic time finding the right writer and artist combinations to do the source material justice. I think young and old alike are going to love these books!"

It's good for kids to get introduced to graphic novel format early, I think.
