Four-week residencies in an artists' colony available in Woodstock

By Ian Randal Strock

The Byrdcliffe Art Colony in Woodstock, New York, offers up to 10 creative artists one of four four-week residencies during the summer (3-29 June, 1-27 July, 29 July-24 August, and 26 August-21 September). Residencies provide the time and space necessary to spur creativity, nurtured within a community of fellow artists.

Admission is by competitive application. Applicants must submit: a work sample; two recommendations; a work plan; a completed application form; and a $35 application fee. Applications are judged by a panel of artists. The program usually accepts five visual artists and five writers for each session.

Byrdcliffe is open to all disciplines of the visual arts, as well as writers of all persuasions. In addition, Byrdcliffe has accommodated composers, photographers, and film makers. Their admission criteria are the quality of the work and seriousness of intent.

The cost is $300 per session, and residents provide their own food. Each artist is assigned their own studio and separate bedroom. Residents share the large kitchen and often collaborate on meals. There is no structured schedule at Byrdcliffe; artists are free to find their own working rhythm and to delve deeply into their work.

Application deadline for this year is 3 March. For full details, links to the application form, and information on several fellowships they offer, see this page.
