People's Choice Awards recognize some genre work and people

Kicking off what looks to be an oddly quiet awards show season (the Golden Globes have already canceled the big awards gala in favor of a news conference, since the actors will be honoring the WGA strike and not showing up), the 35th annual People's Choice Awards were handed out in a televised program on 8 January. The awards come in a whole slew of categories. Those of most interest to genre fans include:

Favorite New TV Comedy: Samantha Who? beat out Aliens in America, Back to You, The Big Bang Theory, Carpoolers, Cavemen, Chuck, Reaper, and Pushing Daisies (yes, it was a big category).

Favorite New TV Drama: Moonlight beat out Big Shots, Bionic Woman, Cane, Dirty Sexy Money, Gossip Girl, Journeyman, K-Ville, Life, Life Is Wild, Private Practice, and Women's Murder Club.

Favorite Sci-Fi Show: Stargate Atlantis beat out Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who.

Favorite Move: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End beat out The Bourne Ultimatum and Transformers.

Favorite Movie Drama: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix beat out Disturbia and Premonition.

Favorite Action Movie: The Bourne Ultimatum beat out 300 and Transformers.

Favorite Family Movie: Shrek the Third beat out Evan Almighty and Ratatouille.

Favorite Threequel: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End beat out The Bourne Ultimatum and Spider-Man 3.

Favorite Leading Lady: Drew Barrymore won over Jessica Alba and Queen Latifah.

Favorite Leading Man: Joaquin Phoenix won over Jamie Foxx and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Favorite Funny Female Star: Ellen DeGeneres won over Whoopi Goldberg and Wanda Sykes.

Favorite Funny Male Star: Robin Williams won over Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler.

Favorite Female Action Star: Keira Knightley won over Jessica Alba and Jodie Foster.

Favorite Male Action Star: Matt Damon won over Johnny Depp and Bruce Willis.

Favorite Female Movie Star: Reese Witherspoon won over Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock.

Favorite Male Movie Star: Johnny Depp won over Denzel Washington and Bruce Willis
